Gooseberry Falls –If you have never been up the Lake Superior north shore in Minnesota you should do it once in your lifetime. I was lucky enough to do it many times as a child and remember it vividly to this day. It’s now been about 50 years since I had the opportunity to stop and climb down the rocks near Gooseberry Falls, although I’ve been past it in recent years. So if I may present a painting strictly from memory of that day some 50 years ago here is Gooseberry Falls, MN.

Golden Lab – Easter Sunday the weather was real nice here in Sacramento, CA USA. We took a drive with the top down and happened through a park in the older part of the city. It was loaded with people doing BBQs and playing games. At the roadside was a group of dogs with their owners. When we stopped, one of them, a Golden Lab laid its head on the door of the car and I took this shot along with some others. If you look careful you can see the reflections of her whiskers in the paint. Your comments are always welcome.

Seascape Exercise #2 - Oil on 11 x 14 Canvas Panel

Seascape Exercise #2 – This one is an attempt to show action or motion within. I got so carried away with the motion that I neglected proper values in several areas. This one is not for sale at this time as I have some reworking to do, or possibly I will just repaint the whole thing. I welcome your comments.

Seascape Exercise #1- I got this new book on how master some different techniques. This is the first exercise I’ve tried. I wanted to learn more about painting water and showing real depth within a painting. I really enjoyed doing this one, as it was a real deviation from the past few months. I totally enjoy the animals and birds I normally paint, but wanted to learn more and grow. Life is more interesting when you are learning something new. Your comments are welcome.

Toy Poodle – Another fun painting. I’m going to do another one in a larger format for an upcoming show also. I always wonder if the coat on these poodles looks right. The colors, this being a chocolate toy I think came out well, but I’d welcome your opinion. Your comments are welcome.

Its Nap Time – Every time I paint one of these kittens and then sit back and look at it I feel very relaxed. It’s a phenomenon that doesn’t occur with other paintings I do, just the kittens, especially the sleeping kittens. The softer they look the more relaxed I feel. I’ll probably keep painting them and just for ducks, I’m going to check my blood pressure to see if the phenomenon actually extends to my BP number.

Homer - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

Sold 3/19/2008

Homer – His new owner brought him home, from sure death at the pound, to a loving environment just yesterday. I was lucky enough to meet him and immediately noticed that he seemed to stair at me forever. Possibly it was the sound of my voice or just a male voice that interested him, but he wouldn’t take his eyes off me so I took a couple of pictures and today put him on canvas. Homer is about 8 or so weeks old and very fluffy. Your comments are welcome.

Wolf Hound #2 – I just love these dogs and this is the second Wolf Hound I have painted. It is similar to, but a much larger canvas than the first. If it doesn’t sell first, it will go in a show I’m doing this summer along with some other larger format paintings. If you like it or don’t like it I’d welcome your comments.

The Pekingese – or at least “a Pekingese”. Two or three months ago in one of my posts I asked that if anyone out there had a good picture of a Pekingese would they please email it to me. Well, I got a number of them and this is a combination of several of the best close-ups. Thank all of you that sent me those pictures. That effort, along with a little on my part, culminated in this painting. I welcome any comments….

Maxine - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

SOLD 3/11/2008

Maxine – She was a large old dog that I knew many years ago, I think a golden retriever mix. It seemed like every time I saw her she was laying on the couch and when I came in she would open an eye to check me out and then back to sleep. I ran across a picture of her and her owner last evening and made the decision to try this painting from memory. I think it turned out well. I’d welcome any comments.

Keel Billed Toucan - The Keel-billed toucans are a very social bird and can often be seen in flocks of six or more birds. They are found throughout Belize's forests and nest in holes in tree trunks. They are the national bird of Belize and known locally as the "bill bird." This is a fun painting subject and colorful along with its habitat. Your comments are welcome.

In the surf – I got the idea for this when I received an email from my cousin Mike in northern Minnesota who wrote that it was minus 22 degrees when he went out to start his car that morning. That email was dated March 7th; just a couple of days ago. I suggested they take a vacation to somewhere warm and sunny. Now, on to the painting. How do you paint the natural force of water in motion, the almost controlled violence of the surf and spray and man’s use and mastering of that force? Well, I’m not sure that I’ve done it. I’ve tried by using different colors and values mixed with a lot of light. I’d like your input and comments. Thanks

Algernon in the Pool - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

No Longer Available

Algernon in the Pool – There are some of you in my email group who will remember the early 1970s, my home in Wichita, KS with the swimming pool and our white kittens. To teach them not to be afraid of falling in the pool I would wait until they were about 8 or so weeks old and then pitch them, all the kittens, directly into the middle of the pool. They are surprisingly adept swimmers, but they have to be convinced of that. They would actually follow me to the steps area and learn to get themselves out. From that point on we never worried about them around the water. Algernon was a special kitten.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – The other day I was at the park, as I usually am once a week or so looking for painting subjects, and I saw this little dog. I thought it was a Cocker Spaniel mix, until, I was corrected by the owner. Turns out it’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I stood corrected and took 5 pictures. She sure was cute…..

Baby - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

SOLD TO A RUSSELL'S GROUP MEMBER

Baby This painting resembles our female cat “Baby” so much I had to name it after her. She is usually somewhere close to me, keeps me company when I paint, on my lap in front of the TV most ever evening and usually next to my pillow at sometime during the night. We rescued her from the county pound about 15 years ago. She is a real member of the family and, of course, runs the household. Your comments are welcome.

Kitten and the Mouse - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

SOLD IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES TO A
RUSSELL'S GROUP MEMBER

If you would like to receive my paintings in your email as I post them,
email me and I'll add you to the Group

Kitten and the Mouse – I like these little fuzzy animals. They are fun to paint and you can do so much with their faces, bring out their personalities and moods and display them any way you like. I think it helps to be an animal lover. This one was intended to show the kitten’s curiosity with something she has never seen before. I can just hear the questions running through her mind. What do you think she is thinking??

Humming Bird on Wire - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

$75.00+$10.00 S & H (USPS Priority Mail to USA)
email me for international Priority Mail rates
California residents add 7.75% sales tax

Humming bird on wire – I’ve seen many of these little birds painted while in flight, so I wanted to do something a little different, sitting still. Their feathers have an almost transparent quality that was difficult to put on canvas. It took several layers of different shades of color and hopefully you will agree with me that it turned out OK. Your comments are welcome.
