Mesabi Range Mine Worker - I've saved this painting to be the last one of this year and also painting number 150 for the year. I painted this from an old (1 1/2" by 2") black and white photograph I found in a folder along with some of my mother's photos that I managed to keep over the years. I'm not quite sure of whom it is, but the date on the back is 1941. The subject is typical of the open pit iron ore mine workers of the time who toiled in the iron ore mines of that area. Most were immigrants or sons of immigrants from the lands surrounding the Baltic Sea, both Nordic and European. They were strong, honest, hard working family men who were blessed with a healthy rugged appearance and square jawed good looks. I'm proud to be of that strain although I'm not sure about the good looks. There is a museum in northern Minnesota dedicated to these people; it's called "Ironword". If you are ever in that neck of the woods, it's worth a stop for a day and If you do stop, please say hello to my cousin Mike, Ironworld's CEO. Its been a good painting year and thank you for looking at my efforts. Your comments are welcome.

Big Sale Today - It's after Christmas and we are all seeing these sales. Personally I'm shopping for a big ticket electronic item to replace the one that keeps giving me "Fault Messages". Who knows what this guy is looking for? Your comments are welcome.

White Throated Sparrow - I've rarely used the knife to apply paint to canvas so this was almost something new for me and here I used it very sparingly. I like the results, however haven't decided if I will use it in the future. Your comments are welcome.

Baby Oriole - I grew up seeing these birds every summer as they are native to the east and midwest. Now that I've been on the west coast for more than 30 years I haven't seen any since the 70s. They are colored with brilliant orange and black plumage. Your comments are welcome

Inuit Mother & Child - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Inuit Mother & Child - I've painted several portraits of Inuit natives in the past and enjoyed doing them. In this painting I attempted to convey the cold and harsh environment they live. I hope it gave you that feeling. Your comments are welcome.

Ribbon & Pearls - I'd planned to paint this some time ago, however several months ago I got sidetracked. This is a period piece from an earlier time, possibly the 1920s. I call it bathroom art. Years ago my mother had and old black and white photograph of one of her old friends from New York hanging in their bathroom. It looked something like this. Your comments are welcome.

The Violin - In my experience the warm tones of old wood are a pleasure to look at although somewhat difficult to paint. This is the Violin. It reminds me of years past and a music store in Kansas I used to frequent. The proprietor was a string instrument repairman, a real professional. People from all over the US would send him instruments to repair and rebuild. His son Monte and I would sit and play guitars and watch him work; it was a real pleasure. Your comments are welcome.

Hirshorn Museum Fountain - Some months ago I was asked to consider doing some architectural renderings and I filed that suggestion in the things to do in the near future file. You see, 45 or so years ago I had done a done a number of buildings all the way up from conceptualizing, working drawings (blue prints) and renderings in the Wichita, KS area. Some of those buildings still are standing today. (Makes me feel old to say that). I tried this painting today and immediately discovered that oils are not the right media for this type of subject matter and also they should be done in a larger format. This painting is an 8 x 10, way too small. My choice would be waters colors and at least 24 x 30. So, I probably will not do another one like this in oils. This Christmas a good set of water color tubes and good papers are on my list. Even though I did not, in my opinion, have the correct materials to do this type of painting I like the way it came out. Your comments are welcome.

Fedora & Cigar - This is reminiscent of the 1960s night life culture that I experienced in the mid-west section of the USA many years ago. Trying to paint cigar smoke as it soars upward and finds its path was a new painting experience. I accidentally stumbled on the right brush for the job and then used several different tones and values to come up with the final result. Your comments are welcome.
