The Toucan - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

SOLD 2/01/2008

The Toucan – I’ve decided to do several of these over time, as there are several different varieties. I like the bright colors and the high contrasts. I purposely blurred the background so the sharp foreground would really stand out, much like taking a picture with a good camera and using a limited depth of field lens setting to amplify interest in the main subject of the photo. Sarah - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

SOLD 1/29/2008
Gone in 10 Minutes

Sarah – A neighbor of ours obtained this unknown breed from the local pound several years ago. They do not know the breed they just know they fell in love with it. We believe it is a mix of a Sheltie and some kind of terrier mix. The coloring is definitely Sheltie but the ears indicate something else. She weighs approximately 20 pounds, possibly a bit more. Before I started painting dogs I took a picture of it specifically to use as a subject in the future and finally got around to it today. If anyone has a better idea of the breed or mix we, the owner and myself, would be grateful for a heads up. Your comments are welcomed.

Ladybug & Cat – I love doing animals, especially small animals. In each offering I attempt to show some part or parts of their unique for personality. In this one I attempted to show the cats natural curiosity for anything that moves. If you look carefully you can just make out the ladybug reflection in the cats eyes. Hope you enjoyed seeing this one as much as I did in painting it. Let me know what you think….

Update 4/21/2009- Although the original photo was sent to me more than a year ago by an old friend I have been informed today that the actual image was created by photographer Allen Tweed. It's a wonderful image and he should be given credit for it.

The Brussels Griffon – Known for having an almost human expression and not needing a lot of exercise, a perfect house dog or house guest. It actually sounds like a lot of people I know. This was a real joy to paint as I got to test a new technique I’ve wanted to try. I won’t write about it except to say that it worked well. Let me know if you like it please……. .

The White Parrot - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

THE WHITE PARROT - How do you give a painting personality? To me the scene has to depict action or emotion of some kind, sometimes a small action will do. In this painting I tried to bring out the personality by showing the bird looking curiously at the viewer. You tell me, did I accomplish it??? Comments welcomed.

Great Gray Owl - The Great Gray Owl has also called Great Gray Ghost is one of the World's largest Owls and native to Canada and the northern USA. I remember as a child in northern Minnesota it was very common to hear the gray owl calling out at night. They have a very soft low-pitched hoot that could be heard up to a half mile away on cold winter nights. That really brings back memories. Let me know if you like it…..

Tippi - Oil on 11 x 14 Canvas Panel

Commission Painting
Completed 01/16/2008

Tippi - Tippi was "evidence" in animal cruelty case (approx. 300 dogs and cats) in southern California. Her rescuer, after having possession of Tippi for less than a month, had to humanely euthanize her due to nerve sheath cancer, a very painful cancer. Tippi was her most heartfelt and painful rescue.

In the cruelty case one perpetrator, a woman, was recently sentenced to 16 months in state prison and another woman was sentenced to 365 days in county jail with five years probation--a condition of which is that she not own any pets or work with any organization devoted to the care, boarding or adoption of animals.

The picture I worked from to create this painting was taken on the day Tippi was laid to sleep. Your comments are always welcome…

My First Bird – After painting a number of dogs I was asked if I had ever painted birds. Well, I hadn’t done one since I was about 14yrs or so (approximately 50 years ago) and in those days I just sketched, so I thought it was about time I painted one. I gave it a try and I like the way it turned out. I’ve got more dogs to do and will start another commission dog painting today, but sometime in the near future I’ll do some more birds. How about some comments as I like to know how I am progressing……..

Natividad - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

Commission Painting
Completed 01/11/2008

Natividad – My client tells me that an artist, (yes an artist) paid kids to capture a starving dog off the street. The artist then put the dog in a public art exhibition and refused to unchain it, give it water or give it food. The visitors to the exhibit were eating and drinking right next to the dog as it was chained. I'm sure the dog smelled the food and would have loved some water. Natividad died while on exhibition. The name of the exhibit was on the wall and was made out of dog food of all things. The exhibit was outside the US and for those of you who want to look at the actual exhibit, here is the link:

Her eyes tell her story. I tried to leave a comment of disgust, but the blog site is no longer open for comments. I wonder why!

The Spitz- (the correct German plural is Spitze, though Spitzen is commonly used in the US) They are characterized as having long, thick, and often white or light colored fur, and pointed ears and muzzles. There are a couple Spitzen that frequent our local coffee shop with their owners, of course. They are always happy to interact with our group of coffee purists. The Spitz

Justice - Oil on 10 x 10 Canvas Panel

Commission Painting

Completed 01/07/2008

Justice I’ve pictured her as she was found. Justice was found along NJ roadside and had been used as a drug mule. She had been forced to swallow drug filled packets, allowing for hidden transportation of drugs. She was bound with a strap around her neck and duct tape on her muzzle and apparently gutted for the drugs within. Her cause-of-death was hemorrhagic shock. My client believes to combat situations like this you have to talk about them and get mad. So here you are. Your comments are always welcome….

The Silky - 10 x 10 Oil on Canvas Panel

SOLD 01/05/2008

Just finished it today so it will have to dry some prior to shipping

The Silky – Some folks at our coffee klatch, Jerry & Pricilla had a silky for years until it passed away a couple years ago. It was a rescue dog and had found a good life with her owners. They now have another rescue dog and are working to acclimate it into society. She still will nip at you if she feels threatened, however the “cute factor” makes up for it. Your comments are welcome........

Miracle - 11 x 14 Oil on Canvas Panel

Commission Painting
Completed 1/03/2008

Miracle - Miracle is another rescue dog and is currently fighting for her life. It doesn't look very good right now. She is 2 months old and barely 4 pounds. Miracle has first, second and third degree burns to 80% of her body. She is a Pit Bull and the sole survivor of 5 pit bull puppies that were hogtied and set on fire by teenagers who haven't yet been found. I’ve painter her laying on a soft white fuzzy blanket.

The accompanying picture is what I had to work from and it shows the care being given her in the struggle to save her life.
