Keel Billed Toucan - The Keel-billed toucans are a very social bird and can often be seen in flocks of six or more birds. They are found throughout Belize's forests and nest in holes in tree trunks. They are the national bird of Belize and known locally as the "bill bird." This is a fun painting subject and colorful along with its habitat. Your comments are welcome.

Humming bird on wire – I’ve seen many of these little birds painted while in flight, so I wanted to do something a little different, sitting still. Their feathers have an almost transparent quality that was difficult to put on canvas. It took several layers of different shades of color and hopefully you will agree with me that it turned out OK. Your comments are welcome.

Black Crowned Crane - The national bird of Nigeria of which the population has plummeted from more than 15,000 birds in the early 1970s to no more than a few individuals today. The Black Crowned Crane is of global conservation concern, is classified as endangered and legally protected. I personally think they are beautiful and when I saw a picture of one I had to paint one. Sun Conure Parrot – Painting the whole bird is much different than painting just the head. It’s harder to show any kind of emotion this way. The Sun Conure can be found naturally in eastern South America, mostly north of the Amazon River, also they were exported to and are now found in Mexico and the Caribbean. Their beautiful coloring makes them highly sought after and their ability to love their human companions adds to their charm. The Sun Conure Parrot.

The Toucan - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

SOLD 2/01/2008

The Toucan – I’ve decided to do several of these over time, as there are several different varieties. I like the bright colors and the high contrasts. I purposely blurred the background so the sharp foreground would really stand out, much like taking a picture with a good camera and using a limited depth of field lens setting to amplify interest in the main subject of the photo. Blue & Yellow Macaw – I really enjoyed painting the first bird the other day and since I received so many nice emails about it I thought I would paint another one similar to it. This one takes a little more aggressive view. Let me know what you think of it….

THE WHITE PARROT - How do you give a painting personality? To me the scene has to depict action or emotion of some kind, sometimes a small action will do. In this painting I tried to bring out the personality by showing the bird looking curiously at the viewer. You tell me, did I accomplish it??? Comments welcomed.

My First Bird – After painting a number of dogs I was asked if I had ever painted birds. Well, I hadn’t done one since I was about 14yrs or so (approximately 50 years ago) and in those days I just sketched, so I thought it was about time I painted one. I gave it a try and I like the way it turned out. I’ve got more dogs to do and will start another commission dog painting today, but sometime in the near future I’ll do some more birds. How about some comments as I like to know how I am progressing……..
