Got Mice?? – I’ve painted a number of dogs in the last month so I decided to try a cat for a change. I’ve never tried one before. I attempted to capture a look of interest and alertness on the part of the feline, after all the title is “Got Mice??”. Did I do it? I always welcome your comments.

Angel - 8 x 10 Oil on canvas panel

Commission Painting
completed 12/29/2007

Angel - Just after her surgery - She Is another rescued dog, weighs 9 pounds and is a 3-year-old spaniel terrier mix.

It is thought that Angel had a wire wrapped around her muzzle for more than 6 weeks. The wounds left by the wire completely encircled Angel's muzzle and were so deep that her teeth were exposed on the side. The wire allowed her to eat, but each time she moved her jaw, it cut even deeper into her skin.

She made a full recovery and was adopted by the family that fostered her following her surgery and treatment.

There is a $15,000 reward.

Saint Barnard Pup - 8 x 10 Oil on canvas panel

SOLD 12/28/2007

Just completed so it will need some drying time

Saint Bernard Pup - The breed was developed at (and named for) the Saint Bernard de Menthon Hospice in the Swiss Alps. The Saint Bernard was used as an avalanche and rescue dog in the snowy passes near the Hospice. Over many years this amazing servant of mankind has saved thousands of people. The dogs search out and find the lost or injured traveler, then lick him and lie next to him to give him warmth. What, no barrel of brandy strapped under its chin?

Mercy - 8 x 10 Oil on canvas panel

Commission Painting
12/27/2007

Mercy - A pit bull mix was a rescue dog. Mercy was a 10 month-old puppy. The 22-year-old owner stabbed his dog, poured an accelerant on her stomach and set her on fire because she wouldn't mate. She lived for 10 days and showed some improvement. Her condition deteriorated and she was given a plasma transfusion, but shortly afterward, her heart--weakened by burns over 60% of her body, stopped beating. Her abuser was captured and is serving 4 years in prison.

Tibetan Terrier pup - According to legend, the Tibetan Terrier originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet over 2000 years ago. They were raised in the monasteries and were never sold but might be given to someone who had done the lamas a favor or to a visiting dignitary; this association with the monasteries gave them the name Holy dog of Tibet.

Bailey the Irish Setter – Bailey and his owners join our coffee klatch on occasion here in Sacramento. He is pampered as you can imagine. Bailey’s owners chauffeur him around town in their new Mercedes 550S; he likes to ride with his head out the sunroof. On occasion they take him along in their airplane. They say he enjoys flying a lot. I can’t blame him as I started flying in 1974. Let me know what you think of him……

Alaskan Malamute – Painted 12/19/2007. These are one of the most beautiful dogs with their cool blue eyes. They are what you might picture as the Alaskan sled dog and probably for good reason. In the future I’m going to paint a couple more of these if I can find good examples to work from. Please let me know what you think. I appreciate your comments.

The Gray Poodle – Painted 12/18/2007. This one took at least twice as long to paint as any other 8 x 10 dog painting I’ve done, but it was worth it. The extra effort paid off in the result. I really am happy with the way it came out, are you? Please let me know what you think. I appreciate your comments.

The Dachshund Pup - 8 x 10 Oil on canvas panel

The Dachshund Pup – Painted 12/18/2007. I’m not sure I’m happy with this painting or not so I’ll post it anyway and then I think make some subtle changes in the next few days. So for the time being it is NFS (not for sale). I will notify you all when it is complete and for sale.

Siberian Husky - 8 x 10 Oil on canvas panel

SOLD 12/17/2007

russells.studio@pacbell.net

I just finished this one this morning so it needs a little drying time.

Siberian Husky – This painting was a real challenge because it was a white dog. I wanted to show the warmth of the animal and its beautiful friendly face, yet the harsh cold conditions of Siberia; difficult to do when everything is white. I hope I achieved it, time will tell. Please comment and let me know what you think..

The Shih Tzu – I read that they probably originated from mating between Tibetan Lhasa Apso dogs brought to China during the 17th century and native Pekinese dogs. I’m going to try a Pekinese soon, but have to find some good examples to work from first. If any of you have a provocative photo of a Pekinese, I’d appreciate and email with the pic.

Lady Collie - 11 x 14 Oil on canvas panel

SOLD 12/13/2007

Lady Collie – As a child in the 1950s I lived on a farm in the Grand Rapids, Minnesota area and had a lady collie just like this one. I would grab my fishing pole and make the half mile or so walk to the back side of our property which bordered the Mississippi and she would always tag along. She was a devoted friend and defender, typical traits of collies everywhere. I’ve always missed her. Doesn't she look happy????

Lucky the Toy Maltese – We had a friend that would bring a Toy Maltese named “Lucky” to our daily coffee klatch. Lucky had a great personality and just knew he was the cutest thing on 4 legs within 50 miles. Our friend died a while back and besides her, we also really miss Lucky. I could just see him half asleep on that brown leather sofa. So here he is……..

Cobra in Oil - 16 x 20 on stretched canvas

email
russells.studio@pacbell.net
Cobra in Oil – Those who know cars will recognize this and those who don’t, probably will not care. In the 60s while living in Wichita, KS I had the pleasure of ride in an original Cobra. They were not common, but there were a few around. They could only be described as brute force with a gas pedal. Now a days I see a replica cobra fairly often and it sounds just like the real thing. The proud owner drives it through the parking lot of our local coffee shop on nice days and every one focuses on it. Once he parked next to my Porsche and I actually felt humbled. There is nothing else like a Cobra.

Latte and Carrot Cake - 11 x 14 Oil on canvas panel

Latte and Carrot Cake

Well, you can guess where I’ve been today; the coffee shop. I’ve spent several afternoons there recently instead of painting as we have beautiful top down weather here and I don’t have any schedule to keep. (You may have noticed the lack of posted paintings for the last few days.) I actually had this combination yesterday and it tasted so good that I wanted to share it with all of you. So, here you are – Latte and Carrot Cake - courtesy of Buckthorn’s Coffee & Deserts shop, Sacramento, CA

A Cup of Coffee

It occurred to me this morning, having just finished preparing Thanksgiving Day Dinner and popping it into the oven and as I was having a cup of coffee, that throughout U.S. history we have celebrated this day by sharing with others. So I decided that before I find my way to the Lazy-boy and sip on some brandy that I should share a cup of coffee with all of you. So have a happy Thanksgiving Day.

Trees On Ridge – This is painted from another photo I took last year while traveling up highway 1 in northern California. As I mentioned before, it’s a photographers and painters paradise. The afternoon sun was out as we traveled north and there was still some leaves changing colors amongst the evergreens. The colorful trees stuck out like fire through the sun colored ground fog and created this scene. If you have never been on this drive before, you should try it in the fall. Trees On Ridge- Let me know what you think please…….

Oregon Coast No. 1

About this time last year, 2006, we took a drive up highway 1 through northern California and Oregon. This route is a photographers and painters paradise for material. The fall of the year is especially good if you like fog and mystic scenes, which I do. I took hundreds of pictures on that trip and have never painted anything from them until today. This picture is of a part of a bay just south of Gold Beach, Oregon. Of course I took a little license, but the day we were there it looked very much like this. The beach sand is formed from volcanic and other rock so it appears gray to black. There were blue skies to the west, fog and clouds around the water and inland. The air was brisk and crisp. After that it was a hot breakfast at a local café just north of there. What a great day.

I was on my way to the coffee shop at about 6:30 this morning when I saw this guy standing in front of McDonalds with a sign that said "Will work for food". Now, not many guys are out at 6:30 AM on Sunday looking for work unless they are really needy. Well I didn't have any work that needed doing, that's my opinion and not my wife's, but the guy looked like he could use a hand. I bought him a breakfast sandwich and coffee and then drove on to the coffee shop all the time thinking that you could see the desperation in his face. Later I came home and painted this quick study in his likeness.

This is another painting from a photo I took from a cruise ship a couple of years ago at Yukatat bay, Alaska. Yukatat bay is a good distance north and west of Juneau. As we got closer to the glacier itself, icebergs floated in the water, some of them the size of a house. The sun was bright that day and late in the afternoon it was a stellar day for color photography. Some of you are probably also photographers as I am, so you will understand what I mean. You could not have asked for a better day to take pictures.

ALASKA No.1– A couple of years ago we took a cruise ship to Alaska. One day somewhere considerably north of Juneau we cruised into Yukatat bay on our way to get up close and personal with Hubbard glacier, there were huge tufted clouds along with ground fog. The mountains on both sides of the ship got closer and closer as we ventured closer to the glacier. I took many pictures that day and this is a painting of a photo from that day. Let me know what you think…………

PITTS IN FLIGHT – When I lived in the Dallas, TX area thirty some years ago I was inspired to take flying lessons after seeing an exhibition of aerobatics preformed by a group of pilots from the Ft. Worth, TX area who were flying Pitts aircraft like this one. If you’ve ever seen such an exhibition of skill and machine you can understand the motivation. Let me know what you think...........

P51 Mustang in flight -16 x20 on stretched canvas

email
russells.studio@pacbell.net

One quick look at the rest of my paintings will tell you that this one is a departure for me. I’ve ventured into unfamiliar, if not unfriendly, territory. I don’t have much experience with blues and I’ve never done an airplane before, although as a child I used to draw them a lot; I think that helped. This was exceptionally difficult as I attempted to picture the P51 with a polished metal exterior (no paint). I think it came out pretty well. Life gets dull without challenges and achievements. This was a real challenge. I would appreciate your comments PLEASE

Russell Baker - NUDE #2 DeAnne-11 x 14 Hand Painted Oil Painting

email
russells.studio@pacbell.net
I got this far on this one this morning after starting it a little while back. After looking at it I decided to post it now and then do the few little updates I want to do and update the picture when completed. I'll call it NUDE #2-Deanne.. I'm going to put it up for sale after the updates. Watch for it soon here and on Ebay.

10/21/2007 Well, I've done some updates and posted a new picture, but I'm still not real happy with it so I'll keep working on it.

Peach Cala Lily No. 3 - 9 x 12 Oil $69.00 + $10 S & H to USA

I thought it was time for some fall colors so painted another Peach Calla Lilly on 9 x 12 Canvas board. The Calla Lilly is such a graceful flower and there are so many
species that you can do calla lilies for any season. This one is almost pumpkin!!!

This is an extremely versatile painting because it would look good if hung in either landscape or portrait fashion. I'll not sign it until the buyer specifies how they want to hang it therefore the signature will look appropriate.

In Thought *** $89 + S & H *** 11 x 14 inches, Original Oil Painting

I've been really busy here at the house on a special project and due to that I haven't posted any work for almost a couple of weeks. I should be able to get back to my old schedule from this point on.

In thought, 11 x 14 on canvas board, completed yesterday is another moody work reminiscent of artsy photography. I'm sure I saw a photo similar to this sometime in the past.

Yellow Calla Lilly No. 2- The picture does not do this one justice at all. It just jumps off the canvas at you. The canvas size is 24in high by 18in wide. The yellow mat (electronically created and NOT for sale with the painting) in this case is approximately 5 inches wide all around and is here as an example only. It makes a prominent statement doesn’t? I just love it.

Nude Torso No. 2 - I love these black and white paintings. Every one is a new experience and with every one, I try something different in the process. This time I almost quit, wiped the whole thing off and started over due to a mistake, but persevered and it finally came out OK.
