Sophie – Sophie is, or I should say was a beautiful gray and white longhair that lived with me for a couple of years many years ago in Lake Dallas, Texas. I’m sure it was hard for her as I traveled for a living and was usually only home on weekends. The neighbors helped me out by feeding her while I was gone. One day she was hit by a car. Opal - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

Opal – We adopted Opal in about 1996. She was sitting up on the spa having a conversation with me while I soaked when she spotted a bird. I hope I’ve captured the expression correctly. Who says you can’t paint expressions on animal’s faces. Opal disappeared mysteriously about a year after we got her. It’s to bad as she was really cute. Your comments are welcome.

The Hunter - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

The Hunter – Hunting in tall grass. Those of you interested in photography will understand what I’ve attempted to do here. For those of you who don’t, I’ve pictured “The Hunter” in a supposed narrowed the depth of field. Having never tried this before with oil paints, it was a real challenge compared to doing it with a camera. The challenge was to blur the foreground while leaving the background or face crystal clear and still show some of the image through the blurred area, much like the camera would do. I learned a lot here and will apply that knowledge to the next one of this type I try. Your comments are welcome.

Its Nap Time – Every time I paint one of these kittens and then sit back and look at it I feel very relaxed. It’s a phenomenon that doesn’t occur with other paintings I do, just the kittens, especially the sleeping kittens. The softer they look the more relaxed I feel. I’ll probably keep painting them and just for ducks, I’m going to check my blood pressure to see if the phenomenon actually extends to my BP number.

Algernon in the Pool - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

Algernon in the Pool – There are some of you in my email group who will remember the early 1970s, my home in Wichita, KS with the swimming pool and our white kittens. To teach them not to be afraid of falling in the pool I would wait until they were about 8 or so weeks old and then pitch them, all the kittens, directly into the middle of the pool. They are surprisingly adept swimmers, but they have to be convinced of that. They would actually follow me to the steps area and learn to get themselves out. From that point on we never worried about them around the water. Algernon was a special kitten.

Baby – This painting resembles our female cat “Baby” so much I had to name it after her. She is usually somewhere close to me, keeps me company when I paint, on my lap in front of the TV most ever evening and usually next to my pillow at sometime during the night. We rescued her from the county pound about 15 years ago. She is a real member of the family and, of course, runs the household. Your comments are welcome.

Kitten and the Mouse – I like these little fuzzy animals. They are fun to paint and you can do so much with their faces, bring out their personalities and moods and display them any way you like. I think it helps to be an animal lover. This one was intended to show the kitten’s curiosity with something she has never seen before. I can just hear the questions running through her mind. The Cat Nap – You can almost her purrrrrrr. If this doesn’t relax you, probably nothing will. I wake most mornings about 3:00 AM or so to the sound of our cat purring while laying next to my pillow. I don’t know why she pics that time of the morning, but she does. It seems like the rest of the day she sleeps on the sofa and doesn’t make a sound. We put up with it because she is such a wonderful and well mannered pet. Since I am awake that early anyway, that’s when I usually paint. The Cat Nap

Deep Thinker - Oil on 8 x 10 Canvas Panel

Deep Thinker – More than twenty years ago we went to our local pound and adopted a little orange female kitten that was ill and they were going to euthanize. She and her siblings had somehow lost their mother and they were all sick cat respiratory disease. I forget the medical name. I agreed to take her to my vet and resolve her medical issues and they allowed us to take her home. Once cured, she was just like any other little kitten except for the fact that she was overly headstrong, much like a male, so we gave her a male name, called her Fred. Through out her life she lived up to that name.

Ladybug & Cat – I love doing animals, especially small animals. In each offering I attempt to show some part or parts of their unique for personality. In this one I attempted to show the cats natural curiosity for anything that moves. If you look carefully you can just make out the ladybug reflection in the cats eyes. Hope you enjoyed seeing this one as much as I did in painting it. Let me know what you think….

Update 4/21/2009- Although the original photo was sent to me more than a year ago by an old friend I have been informed today that the actual image was created by photographer Allen Tweed. It's a wonderful image and he should be given credit for it.

Got Mice?? – I’ve painted a number of dogs in the last month so I decided to try a cat for a change. I’ve never tried one before. I attempted to capture a look of interest and alertness on the part of the feline, after all the title is “Got Mice??”. Did I do it? I always welcome your comments.
