I'm Hungry - Those of you who own or have owned pets know this look. They can make you feel so sorry for them that you just have get to up out of your lazy boy or other, follow them to the kitchen and fill their dish just to get rid of that guilty feeling. I experienced it at about 5:00 AM this morning. Your comments are welcome.

Ed – I was told Ed is a mix of a full sized Poodle and a Scottish Deerhound. I’ve never seen one like this before and was completely taken with him. Ed was well mannered, very friendly and absolutely beautiful. Your comments are welcomed.

On The Table – I wanted to paint this one earlier, but changed the schedule around to paint a couple of others first. I did the light from left to right to bring out the natural contrasts and highlights. It was a fun one to paint. Your comments are welcome……

The Havanese – Many years ago my cousin (by marriage), Alga told me about the Havanese puppies of her native land, Cuba. Recently I found out that the Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, now it all makes sense. Alga has been gone for many years now, but I will always remember her smiling face when describing the Havanese. Your comments are welcome.

The Pomeranian – I painted a Pomeranian recently which had lived with my good friends Jim and Judy in Colorado many years ago. The one I spotted the other day was almost white rather than reddish brown. It looked more like this one. Your comments are welcome.

Marvin No. 2 – I saw Marvin, an elderly Chow, at the coffee shop once again on Thursday. He suffers from arthritis and his owner said his eye site is also getting poor. I decided it was time paint another Chow. These dogs have the most expressive faces and because of that, they make great painting subjects. The second picture is a detail of Marvin’s eye. I just thought the close up was interesting. Your comments are welcome..

4/26/208 - Some of you may notice that this is a new picture with some changes to the original painting. I just was not satisfied with it so did some updates. Hope you like it more.

Nora The Sheltie
– I keep seeing this Sheltie leading it’s owner down the sidewalk by our local coffee shop here in Sacramento. It reminds me of 40 plus years ago when I lived in Wichita, KS and my friend Ed H. (now deceased). He owned this split window 63 Corvette (you car lovers know what I mean). He and his dog Nora, a Sheltie, would pull into our local drive in restaurant and everyone would watch as they parked. Nora, and I think the Corvette too, would attract a lot of the local girls. What a great dog she was. Your comments are welcome.

Judy’s Pomeranian – This one lived in Colorado many years ago and it is painted from memory. When I would visit their home we would sit up till all hours of the night talking and laughing. The Pom would be on her lap. I remember the soft long fur and the always-inquisitive personality. They were good friends and still are to this day although the Pom has been gone for many years. Your comments are always welcome.

Tibetan Spaniel – These Dogs were highly prized in ancient Tibet, and were often given as gifts to royal houses. Depictions of dogs similar to the Tibetan Spaniels have been found on Chinese bronzes from as early as 1100 BC. I personally just think they’re cute! Your comments are welcome.

Marvin the Chow - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

SOLD 4/18/2008

11:40AM

Marvin the Chow – One of the oldest true breeds known to man were hunters in China as early as 150 BC. Marvin is an old Chow and now these days he mostly hunts a good place to take a nap. His personality warm and friendly and he is always at his owner’s sides when they come to our local coffee shop. I’m going to do more Chow Chows in the future as they really have character in their faces. Your comments are welcome.

Afghan Hound - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

SOLD 4/16/2008

Afghan Hound – Not many people know that this dog originated from the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was used to hunt wolves, foxes, and gazelles. I guess that’s why they call them Afghans. Your comments are welcome.

Golden Lab – Easter Sunday the weather was real nice here in Sacramento, CA USA. We took a drive with the top down and happened through a park in the older part of the city. It was loaded with people doing BBQs and playing games. At the roadside was a group of dogs with their owners. When we stopped, one of them, a Golden Lab laid its head on the door of the car and I took this shot along with some others. If you look careful you can see the reflections of her whiskers in the paint. Your comments are always welcome.

Toy Poodle – Another fun painting. I’m going to do another one in a larger format for an upcoming show also. I always wonder if the coat on these poodles looks right. The colors, this being a chocolate toy I think came out well, but I’d welcome your opinion. Your comments are welcome.

Wolf Hound #2 – I just love these dogs and this is the second Wolf Hound I have painted. It is similar to, but a much larger canvas than the first. If it doesn’t sell first, it will go in a show I’m doing this summer along with some other larger format paintings. If you like it or don’t like it I’d welcome your comments.

The Pekingese – or at least “a Pekingese”. Two or three months ago in one of my posts I asked that if anyone out there had a good picture of a Pekingese would they please email it to me. Well, I got a number of them and this is a combination of several of the best close-ups. Thank all of you that sent me those pictures. That effort, along with a little on my part, culminated in this painting. I welcome any comments….

Maxine - Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

SOLD 3/11/2008

Maxine – She was a large old dog that I knew many years ago, I think a golden retriever mix. It seemed like every time I saw her she was laying on the couch and when I came in she would open an eye to check me out and then back to sleep. I ran across a picture of her and her owner last evening and made the decision to try this painting from memory. I think it turned out well. I’d welcome any comments.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – The other day I was at the park, as I usually am once a week or so looking for painting subjects, and I saw this little dog. I thought it was a Cocker Spaniel mix, until, I was corrected by the owner. Turns out it’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I stood corrected and took 5 pictures. She sure was cute…..

The Brussels Griffon – Known for having an almost human expression and not needing a lot of exercise, a perfect house dog or house guest. It actually sounds like a lot of people I know. This was a real joy to paint as I got to test a new technique I’ve wanted to try. I won’t write about it except to say that it worked well. Let me know if you like it please……. .
