Mesabi Range Mine Worker - I've saved this painting to be the last one of this year and also painting number 150 for the year. I painted this from an old (1 1/2" by 2") black and white photograph I found in a folder along with some of my mother's photos that I managed to keep over the years. I'm not quite sure of whom it is, but the date on the back is 1941. The subject is typical of the open pit iron ore mine workers of the time who toiled in the iron ore mines of that area. Most were immigrants or sons of immigrants from the lands surrounding the Baltic Sea, both Nordic and European. They were strong, honest, hard working family men who were blessed with a healthy rugged appearance and square jawed good looks. I'm proud to be of that strain although I'm not sure about the good looks. There is a museum in northern Minnesota dedicated to these people; it's called "Ironword". If you are ever in that neck of the woods, it's worth a stop for a day and If you do stop, please say hello to my cousin Mike, Ironworld's CEO. At the Sacramento Food Bank - Several mornings ago I responded to a televised plea from the Sacramento Food Bank for turkeys for the homeless and needy. They had a goal of 500 for the day. I was there at about 6:00 AM or so and was one of the first 20 or so to donate. On the way there I spotted several homeless, cold and I presume hungry, people huddled on a bench. This resembles one of them. Such character in their faces. The last time I watched the news that day the food bank had collected almost 3000 turkeys for the needy, a tribute to Sacramento, CA. MoonLight - I saw a movie a month or more ago that prompted me to schedual this painting. In the movie the electrical power had failed and there was a full moon. It reflected off the actors faces much like this likeness. The play of lights and darks was moving. I hope this piece is too. Your comments are welcomed.

Homeless Man No. 2 - I've taken a little creative license here and put together two different homeless subjects, both recently photographed on the streets of Sacramento, CA. One was a black man sitting on a bench catching some warm sun and the other was an older balding white man; both men appeared extremely tired. Recently I painted another older man with similar lighting and called it Memories. Your comments are welcome.

Bean Farmer – It was about 20 or so years ago, back when I traveled all the US to make a living. I stopped for lunch at a small café in Santa Rosa, NM. I struck up a conversation with him, but all I can remember is that he wore a large brimmed western hat and had a weather worn face. Since I could not remember his face well enough to reconstruct, I used some of the features of a friend here in California. I like the way it came out. Your comments are welcome.

Homeless Man – I’ve put together an imaginary man from several subjects I observed yesterday in mid town Sacramento, CA. The homeless, like Native Americans, have sometimes almost unimaginable character in their rugged faces. How to capture that character is the challenge. It’s easier with the homeless as I can just go downtown and look at them in person and watch how the bright sunlight from different angles changes their appearances. Some have so much sadness in their faces and others I have observed seem to be very happy. I’ll try painting a happy homeless face in the future. Your comments are welcome.

Old Brave in Minnesota Winter – I grew up in northern Minnesota, that’s why. Senior citizens have so much character in their faces. Painting them is interesting, fun and rewarding if you get it to look right. I think finally I did here. I’d appreciate your comments.
