Face From the Past No.3 - Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber Mix. After thinking about this one I painted it a couple more times. This is the third painting of her in as many days. I like this one the best. A much warmer, sultry and sensuous look was achieved here. The changes are subtle, however this more closely resembles my memories. You can check out the change in look yourself if you look at my Blog post on 1/24/2009 Your comments are welcome.

Face From the Past - Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber mix. Everyone has memories and over the years all those memories change somewhat. I'm sure this one has changed too. I'm going to paint this one again today and see if my memory changes again as the likeness needs something additional or changed, I'll have to think about it a while. Your comments are welcome.

Floral No. 3 - Tried a "new to me" technique here to improve the edges. One step at a time. Your comments are welcome.

Floral No. 2 - Delicate, Delicate, Delicate must prevail. Subtle shades and how much water to use, too much, too little, how many washes, how intense the values, these are all variables to consider. It all makes a great difference. If you look close on the close up you can actually see the petals basking gently in the warmth of the sunshine. I tried to paint this the way artists used to, before masking fluid, but now I think it's time to buy some to improve the edges and highlights. Even without the "Masking Fluid" I like the end result. My First Floral - Watercolor on (Approx) 9 x 12 140 Lb Paper

My First Floral - Not for Sale

A year and a half ago I did some single flowers, much simpler to accomplish. I've always envied floral painters as painting florals is a real discipline. It's not easy to arrive at an acceptable outcome. This painting, for a first effort, is OK, and now I've got some ideas now on how to do the second one. We will see how that one comes out later. Inuit Girl - This is the first Inuit I've done in "Watercolor". It was a real learning experience in wet on dry and layering. It took more time than I expected, but I personally like the outcome.

Your comments, positive or negative, are welcome.

The Flapper - Woman of this era are so classic and what great painting subjects they make. I love the whole ensemble of those times. The dresses and especially the hats set the mood. They seem to complete the outfit and set the wearer apart from the crowd. Your comments are welcome.

Albert Einstein - Watercolor (Approx) 9 x 11.5 140 Lb Paper

Albert Einstein - Not For Sale

One of my personal heroes. I am falling in love with watercolors. This was created with a mixture of different shades of Prussian blue and Burnt Umber. This one is not for sale, however I am going to do a much larger one in the future and then I will probably sell one of them. Your comments are welcome.

Open Pit Laborer - Not For Sale.

I painted this a similar guy recently in oils so tried him again today in watercolors, made a couple of changes and like this version more. This is very fast study, about 30 minutes. Your comments are welcome.

Fall Colors No. 2 - Another fall colors painting. Ideally one of the best ways to get acquainted with watercolors is to use them. I'm learning more everyday. It's surprising how vivid the outcome can be using just a couple of technique changes. Your comments are welcome.

Fall Colors - Not For Sale - Watercolor 9 x 12 on 140Lb Paper

Fall Colors - Not for Sale -

If you have ever been in northern Minnesota in September you've experienced nature’s natural beauty, the fall colors. I personally haven't seen this in about 20 years and now only see it from pictures people send me. This watercolor is painted from memory and is of a lane near "Pokegama Lake".

As I progress with watercolors I see technique changes that I need to make to achieve the results I am looking for. If you've never used watercolors you should try them. It's a wonderful learning experience. Your comments are welcome.

Minnesota Winter #1 - Watercolor on 9 x 12 140lb paper

WC-1
1/2/2009

Minnesota Winter #1 - I wanted to start the new year off with something new for me and those of you who follow my blog will notice an abrupt change in what I have done with this painting. First, this is the first watercolor I've done in approximately 53 years. Just learning to manage the values is a new experience as I've used the tube waters and not the old tubs I had as a child. The present day papers are much better at holding their shape than a half century ago. The only thing that remains the same is the subject matter and the planning of white space. Expect to see more watercolors in the future along with my normal oils. This one is not for sale. Your comments are welcome.
