Dove Lane at Blackberry, MN – I painted this from a memory of my youth. The west end of Dove Lane actually led to a peninsula of land
almost surrounded by the Mississippi river. In this case the frozen Mississippi is on the right. A view from MapQuest indicates that
house and outbuildings are still there. I knew the family that lived there and
went to school with their children; I won’t name them as I don’t have
permission to do so. In those days the winters were raw, windswept and cold and I wanted
to depict that in the painting. I hope I’ve accomplished that. Painting this one
was very difficult for me as I don’t usually use cool tones and just wasn’t
used to working with them at all. I also discovered that painting snow was not
as easy as it sounded and found it difficult. I think I repainted the front left of the painting three
different times before I was happy with it. Comments are welcomed.

The Red Box Car - I've avoided winter scenes for the most part due to not being confident at painting snow covered surfaces, however could not resist doing this winter scene as the Steam engine pushes its way down the rails through snow and crisp cold temps leaving it's steam engine plume behind. I've done a lot of traveling through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah in the winters that I've lived here on the west coast. The clear blue skies are typical along with endless miles of telephone poles and strung cable atop them. Put them all together and here is what you get. Your comments are welcome.

Old Western Prairie Home -Although I have not been there in years, the western prairie states, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma are dotted with scenes like this one and remain in my memory. They make wonderful winter and summer painting subjects. Your comments are welcome.

Buffalo Frost - Oil on 11 x 14 Canvas Panel

NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Buffalo Frost - I deliberated some time on just what to call this piece. I've seen and taken pictures of scenes just like this many times when I traveled just to make a living. This is typical of the prairies of the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas. The ground is frozen, it’s snowing, yet the sun is peeking out just enough to slightly warm the scene. It's so cold that the morning frost has frozen on the buffalo's coat in places. They snort steam from their nostrils and try to feed on what frozen prairie grass remains. Somehow they survive. Your comments are welcome.
